Meet Graduate Eugenia Tettey

Always enthusiastic about her education, Eugenia Tettey refuses to let anything stand in the way of her goals. In May 2022 Eugenia graduated from University of Maryland, College Park with a degree in Biological Science. With plans to pursue a career in medicine, she is taking a gap year for graduate studies in biotechnology. As the first person in her family to pursue a science career, Eugenia joined Nvolve in January 2021 for “the support and structure the organization gives to … women in STEM.” She values the interactions she had at Nvolve because they provided her with “an environment to uphold [her] aspirations.” Especially beneficial were “the different topics of the month” which helped to develop “many attributes that add to being a successful student,” particularly working in a team and advocating for one’s self. Eugenia also enjoyed being part of the Nvolve community. The comradery and connections formed between other scholars and mentors created a safe environment which allowed everybody to “express themselves without judgment.” As she continues to pursue her dreams, Eugenia encourages young college women to apply to Nvolve, since it “will help you to build confidence, intellect, and skills to prepare you to be competitive in the professional world.”

For her mentor Eugenia chose Ms. Angela Burroughs, who works at EthosExcel, Inc. as Patient Engagement & Advocacy Lead, developing and implementing “multi-tiered patient advocacy, recruitment/retention and engagement strategies while facilitating a culture of patient centricity.” Ms. Burroughs joined Nvolve because it is “a well-structured program doing some great and impactful things” and wanted to give back where she could. She enjoyed getting to know the scholars and felt “honored to have been able to walk alongside them at such a crucial time in their academic career and life.” From her perspective, Ms. Burroughs believes that “Nvolve has been a great endeavor for Eugenia” and appreciates the opportunities she had through the Science & Technology Program, including the creation of two science podcasts, “Data Basics” and “STEM Facts”. She is grateful for Nvolve’s “mission to fill gaps that exist in access and support for women scholars of color” as it works to “influence entire career trajectories.”
