Meet The Graduate

Read what Xuechun Deng has to say

I graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Biochemistry in May 2023.  For the first two years after my graduation, I plan to work as a lab technician to gain job experience and explore research interests in preparation for graduate school.

I joined Nvolve in Sep 2021. Initially I was hesitant about committing to Nvolve because of my school workload and the transition I was making from a community college to a big school. But it turned out that this was one of the best decisions that I ever made.

In the last two years, Nvolve consistently prepared the women in my cohort for our careers, advancing our personal development, leadership skills, and career skills.

The weekly huddle meetings were tremendously effective, giving me a chance to explore my strengths and weaknesses and how they relate to my study and future work. I learned the techniques of negotiation, time management, and being resilient. The monthly guest speakers presented us with valuable insight into the job market and useful advice on how to pursue jobs in our fields.

A highlight of Nvolve for me was having the opportunity to plan a major science project where I collaborated with my peers in a real working environment. This experience was a practical and valuable addition to what I learned in my UMD classes.

During the last two years, I had the opportunity to get to know my mentors, Melissa and Faye. They were there for me during a very challenging time, when I was struggling with my transition to UMD, my classwork, and my personal weaknesses, such as being indecisive. Melissa provided me with useful study techniques and advice on how to be bold, confident, and assertive. In the second year, I was confused about my post-graduation plans. But Faye provided me with encouragement, resources, and useful advice to help me make decisions based on a clear plan.

I am deeply grateful to Nvolve for providing me with life-changing learning experiences. As a graduate from Nvolve, I leave a message for fellow scholars and all STEM students to take advantage of every opportunity given to you.

Meet the Mentor: Faye O’Brian

My impressive mentee, Xuechun, has truly blossomed and achieved remarkable growth during our two-year journey together. It fills my heart with joy to be her mentor and witness her incredible transformation.

Right from the start, it was evident that Xuechun had a deep passion for biochemistry and the application of science in drug discovery. Her unwavering focus, determination, and resilience have been key contributors to her success throughout her academic journey. She tackles challenges head-on, always analyzing and finding solutions with an unwavering spirit.

But our connection goes beyond the mentor-mentee relationship. We have built a bond rooted in trust, honesty, and respect. Countless discussions and exchanges have not only enriched our relationship but have also shown me Xuechun's warmth, kindness, and generosity. It is through these heartfelt interactions that I've come to appreciate the exceptional person she is.

As Xuechun embarks on her post-graduation STEM career, I am filled with gratitude to have been part of her journey thus far. I am honored to continue supporting her as she steps into this new phase of life, and I am confident that she will achieve even greater things. I wish her a future filled with success, fulfillment, and countless opportunities to make a positive impact.
